I Finished My 20s and All I Got Was This Stupid Sobriety
Happy Almost February, friends! I was determined to be the first email in your inbox this Monday morning, so I jumped the gun.
Do you like the title of this email? It’s also the title of my one-woman stand up show, premiering in NYC Feb 26th. I highly recommend you get tickets here, because we’ve already sold 49 and the club only holds 80 people and the show is a month away. It may sell out, I may never do it again, and you might die unsatisfied. Your unsatisfied death will likely be unrelated to this show, but still.
I have to be honest - I’d categorize this month as “annoying.” I’ve had chronic back and hip pain for years, and I made it my New Years’ Resolution to finally investigate it. Well, I’m pretending it was a resolution, because the truth is that I was inspired by Carrie’s arc on And Just Like That, and I decided to finally seek treatment. Anyway, after several MRIs, they told me I needed hip surgery, which was a bit of a rough introduction to my 30s. Also, my little sister made fun of me a lot. 26-year-olds are rude. Then, they told me I could first try physical therapy and injecting my own blood into my hip, so I’m doing that for now. But now I go to physical therapy three times/week, which almost makes it my boyfriend. Which is convenient, because I also went through a break-up. Annoying, as I said. But I spent this weekend playing in the show in Philly with my best friend, so things are looking up.
Good news - I signed another deal with Audible, and this one is far more personal to me. More details later. Maybe. Or maybe you’ll just have to wait until it comes out? Thanks everyone for listening to YES WE MUSTARD. And rating it. Even if I had to bully you to do so. It means a lot <3.
I’m now in insane marketing mode for my new book - I’M MORE DATEABLE THAN A PLATE OF REFRIED BEANS. I say “insane,” but really, that just means I’ve DMed a lot of people on Twitter. Which is what I do anyway. I hate to break it to you, but when you buy things, I get to write more things. So…
My reading recommendation this month is anything by Emma Straub. I found her books so digestable, but also poignant and thought-provoking, particularly “All Adults Here.” I was super distracted/annoyed/bummed out all month, and I found myself unable to concentrate on most books/podcasts, but her characters were so relatable and fun that I really sunk straight into them. Highly recommend!
Also, have this New Yorker satire piece this month with my dear friends Julia Edelman and Eugenia Viti. Here’s another little satire piece I wrote a few months ago that has stayed relevant, much to our collective chagrin.
